What Is the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival?

MVAAFF is first a film festival. Its program combines independent and studio-backed work, short films, documentaries, features, conversations and activations. Celebrity appearances and social events draw attention, but do not define the full experience.
The festival sits within a much older Black summer history on Martha’s Vineyard. Oak Bluffs has long gathered Black families, professionals, artists and civic leaders. That history is not a festival amenity. Martha’s Vineyard is the island; Oak Bluffs is one of its towns.

Floyd and Stephanie Rance established the festival in 2002 through Run&Shoot Filmworks. The organizer’s history describes a platform for African American filmmakers, including emerging creators as well as established talent. The Massachusetts Film Office likewise identifies the 2026 event as a nine-day festival established in 2002.
The Oscar-qualifying designation applies to an eligible short-film award pathway; it does not make every screened film an Academy Award nominee. Eligibility still depends on current Academy rules.
The official 2026 homepage calls the event the 24th annual festival. A third-party feature called the same edition its 25th iteration, while contemporary coverage described 2025 as the 23rd annual event. Liberated Paths therefore uses the organizer’s “24th annual” language and flags the numbering conflict for final editorial review rather than silently choosing a universal count.

Start with the film program, then choose a credential. In 2026, options ranged from multiday passes to single tickets and Lounge access. Entry priority varied by tier, open seating did not guarantee a seat, and special events were generally excluded. Do not use “festival pass” as shorthand for all-access.
Read refund terms before paying. The official policy says most sales are final and individual program changes do not trigger refunds. Films, guests, times and venues can change; recheck shortly before each program.
Book the island before building a social calendar. Falmouth and Woods Hole are on Cape Cod, not on Martha’s Vineyard. The Steamship Authority states that vehicle travel on its Woods Hole–Martha’s Vineyard route is reservation-only, while passengers without a vehicle can buy traditional-ferry tickets at the terminal. Other ferry services and flights have their own rules. Confirm arrival port, last connection, parking, baggage and accessible-transfer details for the exact journey.
Allow for island geography. The PAC, lodging, restaurants, beaches and ferry terminals are not one walkable festival compound. Verify late-evening transportation, event shuttles and accessible vehicles rather than assuming rides will be available. The official trip page also says food is not served at the PAC, so plan meals around screening blocks without treating local businesses as guaranteed festival partners.
Protect unprogrammed time. One screening block, one community-history anchor and a verified meal can be more useful than chasing every side event. Ask before photographing people or community spaces.

Its Oak Bluffs reference keeps the island–town distinction clear and treats Black summer life as a multigenerational community history, not an event-season marketing device. LP’s limited-anchor approach also matters here: build the trip around one verified film experience and one community-grounded place, then leave room for travel friction and recovery.
